Clarion by Soft Velocity

Although Softy Comp is not exclusively a Clarion software house,  Clarion for Windows is used for most of our business systems development.

It is true that Clarion does not enjoy such a wide a popularity as other development languages such as VB, Access, Visual C++ or Delphi.  Yet it is interesting to know that since 1994 Clarion for Windows has grown in capabilities and stability.  The reasons here fore are noted shortly:

Clarion lets the developer focus on business rules by using a database dictionary wherein tables and relationships can be defined.  Once this is done, Clarion uses templates to generate the system according the business rules.   Generated code usually arises suspicion, but Clarion allows the developer to change the template parameters. Source code can be inserted in order to achieve a fast, efficient, royalty-free executable that meets the most complex user specifications.

Clarion is a data-centric Advanced Rapid Application Development (ARAD) tool featuring roundtrip code generation that preserves all of your own hand-written code while allowing you to re-generate your application as often as needed. It provides reusable metadata to quickly create "corporate quality" applications to manage business data.

The code generator (AppGen) relies on "templates" to define the application; both UI and business logic. Clarion provides a comprehensive template set crafted by master programmers, hardened by years of use in the the real world. Any programmer can also create their own templates, in effect flawlessly cloning their expertise to all subsequent projects.

Soft Velocity History

SoftVelocity, Inc. was founded in May of 2000 when it acquired the Clarion line application development tools from TopSpeed Corporation. The acquisition made SoftVelocity the owner of the Clarion technology that has been developed since 1989 and all products based on it, including the Clarion for Windows product line and a number of accessory development tools.

One of SoftVelocity's initial goals was to continue the development of the Clarion product line. The company's management team, headed by former TopSpeed Vice President of Product Management Robert Zaunere, is dedicated to making sure Clarion developers are furnished with the latest technology and stay comfortably ahead of the ever-changing technology curve.

"We know it's imperative to shorten the time between identifying new technology and delivering it to our customers," said Zaunere, who was immediately appointed president and CEO of SoftVelocity after he initiated the acquisition of the Clarion product line.

Many of TopSpeed's key employees joined SoftVelocity for the opportunity to re-focus the Clarion technology, and to deliver to the Clarion community with a fresh attitude devoted to continued cutting-edge technology and superior customer relations.

SoftVelocity met immediate success when many longtime Clarion loyalists noticed the infusion of enthusiasm among the company's sales, technical and customer service staffs.

The acquisition of the Clarion product line was a relief for devoted users as it added much needed direction and focus to the product line. Many longtime Clarion users have applauded SoftVelocity's focus toward addressing the real world needs and preferences of developers.

"Clarion developers are some of the most productive programmers in the world — we intend to make sure they become even more productive," Zaunere said.

Clarion has a noted history of significantly reducing development project timelines and associated development costs for a wide variety of corporations and governmental agencies. The SoftVelocity investment group is convinced Clarion will continue to set the standards for rapid application development under the leadership of Zaunere.
